CLASS INFORMATION & EXPECTATIONS
The top priority in 7th grade English is for students to improve their ability to express themselves in both their written and oral work. Class participation and group work are central to the success of the class. Technology plays an increasingly important role in class and for homework assignments. Writing assignments are designed to teach the rudiments of essay construction. The focus on the formal essay format benefits students in their daily writing process; it also helps them directly in their preparation for standardized tests. An extensive study of grammar and vocabulary serves to improve students' writing and public speaking skills.
Students read a wide variety of literature including essays, short stories, newspaper and magazine articles, and novels. These are used for the development of reading strategies, literary interpretation, and appreciation, as well as the models for good writing.
The course will be made up of daily oral language exercises in the form of take home quizzes, vocabulary lessons, reading assignments, journal entries, discussion and note-taking, tests and quizzes, and essay assignments.
Short homework assignments will be given a few nights a week. Homework will range from reading assignments to journal entries to specific grammar worksheets to vocabulary exercises, and will almost always be formally or informally checked the following day. It is very important to keep up with all assigned materials and reading. Late assignments will automatically have percentage points subtracted from the final grade, each day that they are late, with the exception of absences due to illness. Students will be referred to zero hour as well during home room.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME and SOME CONTACT INFORMATION
My name is Ryan E. Posey. I teach 7th grade Language Arts and Reading classes at Indian Creek Middle School. I am 33-years-old. I have lived in Martinsville, Indiana since November, but have lived my entire life in the general area. I graduated from IUPUI with an English degree in 2001 and currently attend Ball State while trying to finish up my master's degree in education. I have been married for three years to my wife, who works as an eye doctor, in Columbus, IN. We are contemplating having children soon, but for now we just have two ornery cats. Outside of my classroom I spend a lot of time coaching boys’ and girls’ tennis. I have been heavily occupied with coaching during my 10-year teaching career. I have also coached cross-country, basketball, and just recently started giving golf lessons. I am a die hard sports fan as well! I enjoy watching and cheering on the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, and Indiana Hoosiers. GO COLTS!
You may ALWAYS email me. I am online frequently. I will get back to you ASAP and will try to do so within 24 hours from when you email me. Most times it will not take that long, but if I am away for the weekend or some other circumstance keeps me from email (it would take something big) it may take a few days. There is no reason for anyone to feel I am out of reach. I encourage you to take advantage of the chat forum. This is a spot where you can ask questions about the course and answer questions for others if you can help them. Typically if one student has a question, there is another out there with the same question. By asking the question in the discussion forum, you can help that student get the answer too.
